REGULAR MUSEUM HOURS are every Saturday from 1:00-4:00pm during the months of July, August and September. But volunteers are needed just before and after the museum season, and during the winter months as well.

NO TELEPHONE EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Of course, it’s an asset, but we’re sure you will find a place at the museum where you can bring – and share – your own experiences and enthusiasm.

TOUR GUIDES
We will train you to conduct a full tour or become well-versed in one or more aspects of the tour. Start with inventors and early history; learn to operate and demonstrate manual switchboards, introduce visitors to early dial systems; help interpret more complex switching systems – and gather passengers for a (virtual) boat trip to see the (actual) Island Telephone Company’s central office.

MOVE HMOs
Our term for heavy metal objects! Help identify, sort, clean, store and record in our Finding Aid, objects – large and small. We are constantly moving equipment to add new exhibits or rearrange storage spaces.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS
Gardening, lawn-mowing, minor building repairs, cleaning, painting – and bigger projects – are all part of keeping up appearances and a roof over our exhibits.

ARCHIVAL WORK
Learn more about the materials in our archives by helping to sort, organize, catalog and preserve documents as varied as photographs, business records, news clippings, and large-format schematics.

TRAIL-CLEARING
Work has begun on a trail from the field behind the main building through the woods to the YMCA Camp Jordan Road. Clearing brush, moving rocks and eventually erecting signage and a telephone line are part of the project.

SCHOOL PROJECTS
Help design, promote and schedule a project to present at the Visitor Center or to take on the road to area schools. “Build A Carbon Transmitter” was presented to home school groups in past years.

GIFT SHOP
Greeting visitors, admission sales, and keeping stock of the Gift Shop are essential parts of the museum’s operation – and the most fun!

PUBLIC RELATIONS AND SPECIAL EVENTS
Assist with organizing, publicizing and operating special events. Collaborations with other groups or organizations is encouraged – the possibilities are endless! Experience in publicity and public relations is important to getting the word out about the museum, its mission, its events and its needs – we need YOU!
